The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 202 is the women’s side of American Legion Post 202, and our work in Williamsport, MD comes down to one idea: veterans and their families should not face hard seasons alone. Here are five concrete ways that plays out.
1. Emergency Assistance When Veterans Need It Most
When a veteran in Washington County needs a ride to the VA, help with a heating bill, or someone to sit with them at the hospital, Unit 202 tries to be the neighbor who shows up. Requests come through our Get Help page or a call to (301) 223-7087, and a volunteer follows up directly.
2. The Poppy Fund: A Century-Old Tradition of Direct Aid
Every spring, Auxiliary volunteers distribute the memorial poppy — a tradition dating back to 1921 — in exchange for donations that fund direct assistance to veterans and their families. It’s the same poppy from “In Flanders Fields,” and the same promise: remembrance that turns into real support. See how to give.
3. Scholarships and Girls State: Investing in Local Kids
Unit 202 awards a scholarship each year to a local student continuing their education, and sponsors young women from the area to attend Maryland Girls State, a hands-on program in citizenship and leadership. It’s how the unit invests in the next generation, not just the last one. Contact us for current scholarship details.
4. Honoring Veterans on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Beyond
Every Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and POW/MIA Recognition Day, Unit 202 turns out for the ceremonies that keep Williamsport’s veterans from being forgotten — flag ceremonies, wreath-layings, and standing on Main Street for the parade. Check the Events Calendar for what’s next.
5. Volunteer and Membership: How You Can Join In
None of this happens without people willing to show up. Some volunteer for a single event; some become full members. Either way, there’s a place at the table.
